GARDEN PLANTS
“A garden is a love song; a duet between a human being and mother nature.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
It is hard to overstate the psychological and physical benefits of connecting with nature. Living a life close to nature is good for mind, body and soul, and improves mental health and emotional well being. One feels more vital and happier, and finds better meaning in one’s life.
A garden around the house is one of the simplest routes to being close to the greenery of nature. The garden adds to the visual beauty of the place and allows the residents to dwell amidst nature. Benefits of gardening in fact go beyond creating a beautiful garden and connecting with nature. The activities associated with gardening can burn off calories and can be the substitute for daily workouts one does to stay healthy. These activities provide the physical exercise for the body, and the greenery provides the conditioning for the mind. Flowers and ornamental plants increase the levels of positive energy, mental focus and concentration. Colourful butterflies and nector-eating birds that flock to the garden would make one feel better in the moment.
Gardening can help not only to exercise, relax and enjoy nature’s beauty, but also to develop a deep and meaningful bond with nature.
We grow few varieties of flowering and non-flowering plants, none exotic but common ones suited to the tropical climate. Most plants are in pots, and few such as Queen crape myrtle (Poomaruthu), and creepers such as Garlic vine that generally do not flower in pots, are planted in the ground.
